Some aspects I'm interested in pursuing through some connected thinking, research and discussion.

Situated learning in a networked world

1. Using situated events (think Floriade)
2. Presentation to the Open Polytechnic (hosted by Marica Sevelj and the eLearning team)
3. Interactive podcasting - co-creating asynchronous audio posts?

Informal - situated - formal learning (especially for teacher development activities)

This diagram shows us a big picture of how learning impacts via our living. Informally, we learn everywhere (and even when we don't know it).
We learn in-situ, contextual and within definite settings (that inform our need to apply knowledge, reflect on experience, solve problems, negotiate with others, etc).
We sometimes need to accredit our knowledge and skills for the varied roles we undertake as citizens too; thus we can formalise our learning.

BUT....is this enough? How do we effect this as facilitators of learning?

I began with this model in mind, particularly in collaborating on a conference paper with Len...
I see this as fundamentally focusing on delivery modes for courses, through which we facilitate learning.


I've changed my mind... it should perhaps look more like this...

Mobile - flexible - electronic learning (the learners' point of view)

We need to radically change our view of learner-centredness, to get away from the rhetoric in terms of delivery, modes and approaches.
The focus must be on the learner, where learning is seen from their point of view, as their choice to make.

Mobile = the movements of the learner; diversity and difference; multiple roles in living; multiple needs in a complex world. [Context]
Flexible = where learners' approaches to learning fit in with them being mobile. [Needs]
Electronic = the means through which learners can be mobile and flexible to manage, capture, assess and evaluate their learning (with timely help from learning facilitators). [Enabler]

Is this a realistic equation to draw from the above?

Learning = [Context] + [Needs] + [Enabler]

So, where is the network?

People ARE the network! People connect with one another to form the network, in order to learn from others, what you don't know yourself - BEING the network.

George Siemens outlines a theory of connectivism with these points (presented at Global Summit 2006):

  • Knowledge may reside in non-human appliances, and learning is enabled/ facilitated by technology

  • Alterations in the information climate alter approaches
